Why Your Shopify Variants Are in the Wrong Order (and How to Fix Them in Bulk)

You open a product page and the size picker reads L, M, XS, S, XL. Nothing is technically broken, but it looks careless, and shoppers have to hunt for their size. On a store with hundreds of products, it’s a quiet conversion killer.
Why variants end up out of order
Shopify shows option values in the order they’re stored on the product, not alphabetically or by size. That order is set when the product is created, so it often ends up wrong:
- Imports (CSV, migration tools, or another platform) create variants in whatever order the source data had, often the order they were first added years ago.
- Adding a size later appends it to the end, so XS added after launch shows up last.
- Alphabetical sorting by some tools gives L, M, S, XL, XS, which is alphabetical and still wrong.
Fixing one product manually
In the Shopify admin, open the product, edit the option (for example Size), and drag the values into the order you want. The storefront variant picker follows that order. It takes about a minute per product, which is fine for five products and painful for five hundred.
Fixing the whole catalog
For bulk fixes you have two routes:
- CSV round-trip: export products, reorder the variant rows so the first appearance of each option value is in the right order, then re-import. It works, but it’s easy to overwrite other data by mistake. Always back up first.
- A variant-sorting app: define the order once and apply it across products or whole collections. This is why we built bulk variant sorting into Woopify-Sync. Imported catalogs almost always need it, but it works on any Shopify product.
Sensible default orders
- Clothing sizes: XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL
- Numeric sizes: ascending (36, 37, 38… or 6, 6.5, 7…)
- Colours: best-sellers first, or neutrals (black, white, grey) before brights
- Capacity or quantity: smallest to largest (250 ml, 500 ml, 1 L)
Prevent it from happening again
- Keep a written standard for option names and values (“Size”, not “size” or “Sizes”).
- When adding a new size to an existing product, reorder immediately.
- After any bulk import, spot-check five products on the storefront before moving on.
Hundreds of products to fix? Woopify-Sync sorts variants in bulk across products and collections. The free plan includes 25 variant sorts a month.
